I recently watched “The Blind Side” in a local dollar theatre. I know, it’s out on DVD/Blu-Ray. I am slow to see movies sometimes!
Anyway, I thought it was an absolutely wonderful movie. It raised some questions in my mind:
1) What can we do as Christians to change the situation of inner city violence, drugs, and other crime?
2) How are Christians to live in society? How can we step up and become leaders in our communities for change and reform?
3) What can I (specifically, but anyone can apply this to him/herself) do to help the poor and downtrodden in our society?
It was a very powerful movie, with Christian undertones. It has lead me to seek answers to these questions. I’d appreciate any feedback/suggestions. What do you think we can do?

What to do… Hm… One thing we absolutely must do is not keep our religion to ourselves. Our faith is not a private matter and we must give voice to our religious conviction in the public square. Bishop Olmsted wrote a great little booklet on this subject from a Catholic point of view, “Catholics in the Public Square”. One wouldn’t have to be a Catholic to benefit from reading it. Here’s a link to read it online:

and here’s a link to an interview with the bishop too.

If you have links to other such writings from a non-Catholic point of view, I’d appreciate them. I’d read them. This is an important topic, JW. A vital one. We Christians are supposed to be the light of the world, the leaven that will leaven all of society. We’d best be about our Father’s business. We have not inherited a spirit of weakness. We must be bold!

Indeed! I think one of the most important things is to do as you say: Spread the Word! Changing society involves not just laws or rules, it involves paradigm shifts. It involves changing people’s views.
