Each Week on Saturday, so long as I remember, I’ll be asking a “Question of the Week.” I’d love your input and discussion! Ask a good question in the comments and it may show up as the next week’s question! I may answer the questions in the comments myself.
Historical Theology and Church History Books
If you could recommend just one book on church history or historical theology, which would it be? (Feel free to select one’s for a period, such as Reformation theology or a book on the Great Schism, etc.)

Brian Tierny’s ‘The Medieval Crisis of Church and State 1050-1300’ is quite good.

Posted by J.W. Wartick | May 24, 2014, 9:21 AMThe specialization and the rigorous scholarship, as well as the inclusion of the primary texts that he’s concerned with. As far as scholarship goes, he’s second to none in this area, though, again, it’s pretty specialized.

Posted by J.W. Wartick | May 24, 2014, 9:35 AMI found Roger Olson’s The Story of Christian Theology to be helpful
Posted by SLIMJIM | May 24, 2014, 11:04 PMWhat is it about the book that you enjoy so much?
Posted by J.W. Wartick | May 25, 2014, 11:48 AMI don’t know…I think it did a good job capturing Church history pre-Reformation. I do wished he spent more time with Calvin and Reformed Scholastics
Posted by SLIMJIM | May 26, 2014, 10:12 PMJW, I can’t recommend only one. I’ve been working my way through the four bibliographies listed on this webpage for the past few years: https://divinity.uchicago.edu/history-christianity
